Overview:
Fish are raised in enclosures
made different materials in offshore costal waters or in freshwater
lakes.
Most Prevalent
Species Raised:
Salmon, Tuna
Concerns:
-Waste, including feces and uneaten food pellets, from these densely
populated pens can pollute the surrounding environment.
-Farmed fish can escape from their enclosures and compete with local
wild fish for natural resources, modifying the local ecosystem.
-Escaped fish can interbreed with populations of wild fish thus
decreasing the hardiness of the wild gene pool.
-Diseases and Parasites that are common in highly populated farms can
spread to wild fish
