Overview:
Shellfish are grown on beaches or
they are suspended in water by means of ropes, plastic trays or mesh
bags. The shellfish farmed using these methods are filter feeders
and require only clean water to survive.
Most Prevalent
Species Raised:
Oysters, Mussels, Clams
Concerns:
-Farmed filter feeders can cleanse nutrients rich water, leaving few
nutrients for wild filter feeders
-Placing shellfish farms in areas with little current of low tidal
flows can lead to accumulation of waste.
-Shellfish cultures have been responsible for the introduction of
exotic species that can out compete native species for natural
resources.
