Overview:
Illegal, unreported and unregulated
(IUU) fishing is thought to account up to 30% of total
catches in some major fisheries.
Illegal fishing is an organized criminal
activity and the illegally caught fish is so well hidden
that it is often sold along with legally caught fish
in the major markets.
How IUU fishers operate:
Fishing in waters
that are protected by an international or domestic laws.
Misreporting catches to authorities.
Using fishing methods that undermine
conservation efforts.
Organizations
working against Illegal Fishing:
High
Seas Task Force
The
Task Force was established in 2003 by a small group
of fisheries ministers and international NGOs who decided
to work together to develop an action plan designed
to combat illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing
on the high seas.
