Overview:
A built in costal or inland areas
using a variety of materials ranging from dirt to concrete.
The ponds can be filled with sea water or freshwater depending
on the species being raised. Waste water from Pond aquaculture
may or may not be treated after its use
Most Prevalent Species Raised:
tropical marine shrimp, catfish, tilapia
Concerns:
-The construction of shrimp ponds and other fish ponds
throughout the developing world has been responsible for
destroying and estimated 52% of lost mangrove forest
over the two decades.
-Untreated wastewater can pollute surrounding area including
contaminating ground water
-Shot life spans of intensive shrimp farm leaves the land
unusable after its use.
